How much area does one Wi-Fi node cover?
A modern dual- or tri-band router or mesh unit reliably covers roughly 1,500–2,000 sq ft of open floor. This tool uses 1,600 sq ft as the baseline and then adjusts it for construction: open-plan and drywall homes stretch further, while brick, concrete, and plaster cut the usable reach sharply. The number it returns is the count of access points — your main router plus any satellites — to blanket the whole floor area.
Does the number of floors matter?
Yes. Wi-Fi passes through floors far worse than through interior walls, so a tall, narrow house often needs more coverage than its square footage alone suggests. The calculator recommends at least one access point per storey, then adds more if the total area demands it, because a single unit on the ground floor rarely reaches an attic office cleanly.
Is mesh better than a single powerful router?
For anything beyond a small flat, usually yes. One router can be fast, but radio power and antenna design can't beat physics — walls and distance still attenuate the signal. A mesh system places extra access points closer to where you use devices, so the signal each device sees is stronger. How should I place the satellites?
Put the main router central and high, not tucked in a cabinet, and place each satellite about halfway between the router and the dead zone — close enough to get a strong backhaul link, far enough to extend it. Wiring satellites back with Ethernet where you can is the single biggest upgrade. Treat this estimate as a starting layout, then confirm with a signal test on your phone.
