In theory, gadget stores should be the perfect startups. They’re about as close to a guaranteed market as a startup can get. Everyone needs gadgets, and there are tons of new ones released every year. And there are even passionate gadget enthusiasts who keep up on the latest developments in the field.
So why is it so hard to start one? I think the reason is that when people go to buy gadgets they don’t want a store that just sells gadgets. They want a store that sells good ones. And the only way to know what’s good is to do things like take apart cameras or read specialist magazines or ask your friends who have had them for awhile what they think.

It’s not impossible to sell gadgets without doing this research, but you’re at a disadvantage compared with big companies like Best Buy and Circuit City. Because those companies can afford to hire experts and because they already have relationships with suppliers, it’s easier for them to know what is good.
But that doesn’t make it impossible for you to compete with them; it just means you’ll have to work harder than they do. The advantage you have over them is that their knowledge tends to get diffused throughout their organizations and
