This is the third year we’ve run this survey — and the second year that nanotech has taken the number one spot as your most anticipated future technology. Nanotech and biotech also dominate the rest of your top ten list, as you’ll see below. I’m personally surprised by how static it’s been — there hasn’t been a lot of change in the last two years. It seems to me that there are more exciting technologies coming on line than you have indicated here. For example, robotics has made big leaps in the last few years (from Roombas to Asimo), and I think human-level AI is probably closer than any of us here at WIRED HQ think (but don’t ask me what year). Also, I couldn’t believe that quantum computing didn’t make it into your top ten this year — or any other year! Has anyone noticed it isn’t on the list? Maybe it comes off as too geeky for you law-abiding types. Or maybe you all think quantum computing is overhyped — which would be a completely reasonable response.

It’s that time of year again. The time when the tech gurus, analysts and bloggers get to predict what technologies will be big in the coming year. This year we asked our readers to vote for their top 10 technologies of the future.

In the past we have been astounded at how many of our readers are able to see beyond the present-day tech and predict what will be hot in five years time. Last year, for example, we predicted that speech-based search would become a reality. Although it is not yet widely used, we have seen significant developments over the past 12 months. Both Google and Microsoft have begun testing voice search technology, while Apple has included voice control in its iPhone 3GS handset.

The technology that won top spot this year was fully mobile broadband – where mobile internet is fast enough to allow streaming video – which was high on last year’s list too.

As our top story pointed out earlier this month: “Fully mobile broadband has a number of drawbacks, not least cost and coverage – which means that it remains a pipe dream in many parts of the country – but there are signs that progress is being made.”

The following ten technologies seem to be on everyone’s radar. While there’s no guarantee that all of them will develop exactly as predicted, it seems reasonable to assume that the future holds plenty of surprises for us.

Virtual reality is already changing the way we work and play, but it’s only just getting started. Expect VR to become mainstream, with more and more people using it in their day-to-day lives as a way to connect with people as well as products and services.
