What’s the difference between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth? Here’s how they work

Smart technology, like smart phones or smart watches, are being used more and more in our daily lives. But what is the difference between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth? They are both wireless connection technologies that allow your smart devices to communicate with each other. Here’s how they work:

Wi-Fi is a “wireless local area network” (WLAN) that allows one or more computers to communicate with another computer over short distances. A WLAN uses radio waves to transfer data from one device to another. A device such as a laptop transmits a WLAN signal to another device such as a phone through an access point, also known as a hotspot. This hotspot can be a router or a cable modem connected to an internet service provider (ISP). Once you have established an internet connection, you can use Wi-Fi to download apps, stream videos, send emails, and do many other activities on your device.

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows devices to connect and share information without using cables. Bluetooth works by using short-range radio signals. Your phone transmits this radio signal with minimal power consumption over a distance of up to 10 meters. For example, you can connect your phone wirelessly with headphones or smart speakers using Bluetooth

There are so many different kinds of smart technology, but they do share one common trait: they all require a connection to your home internet in order to work.

The idea of connecting a computer to the internet without wires is appealing for many reasons. Many people today like to be able to access the internet from their phone or laptop wherever they are and whatever they are doing, and Wi-Fi has made this possible.

Some Wi-Fi standards, such as the 802.11n standard, can provide internet access to users over fairly long distances, up to 100 meters indoors and 300 meters outdoors (with the right equipment). This means that a single Wi-Fi router can provide internet access to an entire house, or even a garden.

It allows two devices to communicate over a distance of up to 10m (33 feet) by using short length radio waves in the ISM band at 2.4 GHz. Bluetooth was originally developed as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables, which were widely used at the time in many types of computers and peripherals. It was subsequently adopted by mobile phones and other portable devices, with most modern mobile phones supporting both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.
