The Android Market is Thriving! (Infographic)

At the end of last year, we reported on the growth of Android apps, and found that app downloads were increasing at a rate of about 32% per month. This week, Google made some interesting announcements at their I/O Conference in San Francisco, including the fact that there have been over 3 billion total downloads from the Android Market to date!

We’ve created a new infographic to show how this compares to other mobile platforms. Check it out below!

Google and Apple are locked in a fierce battle for smartphone supremacy. This infographic, based off of comScore data, shows how the market is shaping up. Today’s Android Market is thriving, while Nokia and RIM are under assault.

This infographic is a testament to the growing Android market, and how it’s becoming a legitimate competitor to Apple’s iOS platform.

As you can see, the Android Market has grown steadily over the last few years. There were only 200 apps in 2008, but now there are over 500,000 apps available. The Android Market is also growing much faster than the iOS App Store. In 2010 alone, the Android Market grew by 250%.

In terms of downloads per month, the Android Market is now on par with Apple’s App Store. In fact, Google says that Android users have downloaded 10 billion apps so far.

The number of developers creating apps for the Android Market is also growing. According to this infographic, more than 300,000 developers have created apps for android devices.

There are also many popular games available for android devices now. For example, Angry Birds has been downloaded over 100 million times on android devices. And Cut The Rope has been downloaded 50 million times on android devices.

The Android Market is still ever growing, with a current count of over 150K apps and counting. But at what rate are these apps being developed?

Appcelerator has just released an awesome infographic (shown below) that illustrates the growth of the Android Market, in comparison to the Apple App Store.

The infographic shows the trends in application development for both the Android Market and the Apple App Store over a six month period from November 2010 – April 2011. The data was collected from 6,000 developers using their tools and publishing on both platforms.

The question is: Are all of these apps making money? Well, about half (48%) of Android developers are currently making less than $5,000/month from their app sales. This could be due to a number of reasons as not every app category can make millions in sales each month. It also raises questions about how much time was spent on each app’s development and marketing.

The Android Market is a thriving place, with a growing selection of apps filling every niche, and mobile app developers are seeing the potential to make money on the platform. In fact, it’s estimated that the average Android developer makes $2,450 per month on their smartphone apps. And for some developers this amount can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars!

Android is now the most popular operating system on the market, with over 60% of the market share in Q1 2012. With these figures, it’s no wonder that companies are rushing to cash in on this new trend. The biggest challenge is how to keep up with all the competition and create something truly innovative.

While Apple’s iOS was once the undisputed king of mobile apps, Android is quickly catching up. With more than 240 million Android devices sold to date and an estimated 1.3 million new activations each day, the Android market is thriving.

Android Apps are available in 132 countries around the world and have been downloaded more than 10 billion times. In fact, there are now 450,000 apps in the Android Market, which is nearly twice as many as what iOS offers.

Who are these app downloaders? According to a recent survey by Nielsen, “Android users tend to be younger and have lower incomes than iPhone users”. Android’s popularity with younger demographics may also explain why Google Play (aka the Android Market) has almost four times as many free apps as paid apps.

One of the most frequent questions we get from our clients is: Why is it so important to be on Android?

The answer is simple: Android is growing at a staggering rate.

Android’s growth has been accelerating and we don’t see any signs that this trend will change. To help make sense of this rapid growth, we put together an infographic that highlights some key metrics around Android. You can find it below and feel free to share it with others.
