Have you heard the news? The Apple Watch was just released. Here are a few things you need to know:

If you’re excited about getting an Apple Watch, you might have to wait. When the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were released, many stores ran out of them. When the iPad Air 2 was announced, there weren’t enough to go around — the same goes for the iPad Mini 3, which came out alongside the Air 2.

The Apple Watch is available in three different models: the Pebble-like Sport (starting at $349), the mid-range steel ($549–$1,049) and Edition (starting at $10,000). The Sport has a special aluminum body that’s 60 percent stronger than regular aluminum but just as light. The stainless steel Apple Watch is made from a custom alloy of stainless steel that’s 80 percent stronger than standard alloys but is just as light as the aluminum used for the Sport version. And finally, there’s the 18-karat gold Edition watch. It’s made from 18-karat yellow or rose gold that’s twice as hard as standard gold and is designed to retain its finish over time.

The Apple Watch comes in two different sizes, 38 mm and 42 mm. The smaller model

Have you heard the news? The Apple Watch was just released. Here are a few things you need to know:

1. It’s not available in any stores yet. It is only available through pre-order, and it will ship on April 24th.

2. You have to have an iPhone 5 or a later model to use the watch. It will connect via Bluetooth 4.0, so if you have an iPhone that uses this version of Bluetooth, you’re all set!

3. You will be able to read messages and emails, text, make calls and listen to music on the watch, just like an iPhone!

4. The battery life is impressive! You can expect 18 hours of usage, but it will last up to 3 days if you don’t use it at all during that time frame!

5. If you want to see your notifications, raise your wrist and they will appear on the screen automatically. This feature is called “raise to wake.”

Have you heard the news? The Apple Watch was just released. Here are a few things you need to know:

1. You can’t buy one in stores yet.

3. You can only order it by making an appointment at an Apple Store and buying it there, and the earliest appointments are in June.

4. Only certain models will be available then.

5. But if you’re reading this in April, you probably won’t be able to buy any until July or August anyway, because demand is expected to outstrip supply for quite a while.

6. If you do manage to get an appointment in April, you’ll have to pick from among only three models in one of two colors (white or black), with only two sizes of watch band (38mm or 42mm).

7. The cheapest model will cost $349 (and don’t forget that this is a device that needs to be recharged every night, which means another $79 for a charging stand).

8. The most expensive model will cost around $10,000 (but if you want something like that, why not just buy a Rolex?).

The Apple Watch was just released, but it is already on its way to becoming the most successful new product in history. It is likely to sell more units than the original Macintosh did in 1984, and possibly even the iPhone in 2007. At first glance this seems puzzling: the Apple Watch isn’t a significant breakthrough in technology. But that misses the point. The watch is only the latest example of a new strategy that has made Apple one of the most valuable companies on earth: creating products so useful and compelling that they induce people to buy other products as well.

The most valuable businesses of coming decades will be built by entrepreneurs who seek to empower people rather than try to make them obsolete. By shifting their focus from competing with other businesses to empowering their customers, these entrepreneurs will help build a stronger economy and a stronger society as well.

Apple’s strategy, which I call vertical integration, can be effective when done right, but it also carries some risk: vertical integration sometimes makes it harder for companies to adapt to changing circumstances. As Apple has grown bigger and more profitable, it may find this risk harder to manage.
