Personal Servers: FAQ

What is the Personal Server?

The Personal Server is a server that you control. It’s in your house, or under your desk, or in your bedroom, and it does whatever you want it to do. The Personal Server is a computer that runs all the time so it can handle tasks like serving media files, sending email and instant messages, sharing files with friends, or running a web site. It can also run applications for you to use on demand. Think of it as your own personal cloud.

Why do I need a Personal Server?

A Personal Server gives you control of your information and applications. You don’t have to trust your data to third parties (though we hope you’ll trust us a bit). You don’t have to worry about someone else changing the terms of service on you in ways that affect your life. You don’t have to worry about whether you’re going to lose access to things because someone went out of business or decided they didn’t like you anymore. And you get more privacy than using services run by other people — no one will be scanning your personal data for advertising purposes.

Personal Servers

We are pleased to announce the hightech Personal Servers.

The hightech personal servers are a new breed of server for small businesses and home offices: they pack an Intel Core i7, 1TB of storage, 8GB of RAM, and two 1Gbps ethernet ports into a box that is just 13″ x 9″ x 6″. The specs are top-notch but the price is not: at $449 it is half the price of comparable servers.

The hightech personal servers are designed for one primary use case: hosting your own website, email server, blogging tool, or anything else you had previously been outsourcing to third parties. With a hightech personal server your data belongs to you and only you; no more having your social networking accounts made obsolete by business decisions elsewhere.

We’ve released a blog on the subject as well as a brochure.

hightech, the company that provides high-performance computing solutions for secure data centers and cloud clusters, today announced the launch of a new line of personal servers. The hightech Personal Server is a full-fledged data center in a sleek box, designed to fit on your desk.

Some people have blogs, wiki sites or even personal servers in their homes. For example, some bloggers have their own servers in the basement. We wanted to make it more convenient for them to do this. Our goal was to come up with a device that could run an entire data center and yet would be small enough to fit on your desk.

The hightech Personal Servers are designed so that you can plug them in, turn them on and run a fully functional data center right away. They are based on our high-performance server architecture and provide leading performance per watt for all applications. They include redundant power supplies and cooling systems as well as a secure management subsystem for remote monitoring and control. Local storage is provided by four 2TB solid state drives configured in RAID0 configuration for extremely fast I/O throughput. Each server has 6 cores (12 threads) running at 4 GHz per core, 32 GB RAM and 8 TB of storage (4x2TB SSDs running

We know that most people are not as technologically savvy as they would like to be and therefore have made our interface extremely user friendly. We’ve also done our best to make it easy for you to obtain technical support; for example, any time you are logged in on a weekend and do not have any active downloads, our support technicians will automatically log in to your account and run scans for any potential problems. You don’t even need to be there!

So stop renting space from large providers who don’t care about your needs and take control of your web presence with hightech Personal Servers!

The hightech Personal Server (hPS) is a server that is so small and quiet that you can keep it at your desk, right next to your computer.

The hPS comes in two models. Both have 128 MB memory, 6 GB disk, and 100 Mbps ethernet; both run the Linux operating system. The models differ only in price: $500 and $1500 respectively.

Why pay more? Because the more expensive model includes a six-month warranty and a guarantee that if you are not completely satisfied with the product you can return it for a full refund within one month of purchase. If you would like to purchase either model without these extras, the price is reduced to $400 or $1400 respectively.

The warranty covers parts and labor; shipping costs are included. And if something goes wrong with your hPS during the warranty period, we will replace it with a new one rather than attempt to fix it.
