It was designed by Saurik (Jay Freeman) to be a full-featured package manager for jailbroken iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches, giving users access to thousands of apps, tweaks, mods, ringtones, games and much more that can all be downloaded on demand directly to your iDevice.

Unlike the App Store where everything is approved and vetted by Apple itself, Cydia apps go through no such process – meaning there is a variety of quality between them. While some are excellent and just what you’re looking for, others are buggy or just plain bad.

Cydia functions as an alternative to Apple’s App Store for “jailbroken” devices (iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches), at this time including iPhones using iOS 2 through 5. The name “Cydia” is an allusion to the codling moth caterpillar, which molts (or “shedders”) its skin multiple times before becoming a full adult. The creators of Cydia chose this name because they have intended Cydia from its inception to be an advanced interface to a Unix system (iOS is based on Darwin), while its rival Installer was more focused on graphical user experience (much like Mac OS X).

For those of you who don’t know, Cydia is an application that allows you to explore and view thousands of apps, tweaks and themes that are not available on the official Apple App Store. Although it is possible to get some of these as paid apps, most are available for free.

To get Cydia, you will need to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch (as a side note, if you are not sure what this means, see our beginner’s guide to jailbreaking). Once you have done this, tap on the icon marked ‘Cydia’ and follow the instructions to install the application.

Installing Cydia is very simple: just open the app and follow the prompts. The first thing you will notice when you enter Cydia is that there aren’t any apps displayed. This is because there are so many different ones available that it would be impossible to display them all at once; instead, they are divided into categories which can be accessed by tapping on one of the icons at the bottom of the screen. What Is Cydia?

In simple terms, the app store allows users to download third party applications (apps) on their Apple devices provided they are official Apple apps. However, if you want to download unofficial apps (i.e., non-Apple apps), you need to jailbreak your device first. Jailbreaking is a process that allows users to gain root access (administrator privileges) on their devices and thereby enable them to install unauthorized software from places like Cydia. If you can regain access to your device using one of the methods above (e.g., passcode or iTunes restore), then you can avoid having to jailbreak it again.
